  • Alloy Fabweld & Rebel Strength - The Combined Strength Behind Steel Warriors

Making Metal and Communities Work: Building lives and communities from steel away from knife crime The article in the Guardian this week: ‘Cutting edge: turning street knives into urban gyms’ demonstrates the positive impact of this concept in helping the communities. The calisthenics gyms are a key focus for people to sharpen their skills and strength, the outdoor gyms are taking knifes off the streets and giving young people a chance and focus away from gang crime. Steel Warriors is an innovative charity that understands what is needed on the ground to make a difference. Steel Warriors collect the knives that have been confiscated from the streets by police. Alloy Fabweld and Rebel Strength combined our skills to make the urban gyms a reality, by using our specialist expertise and knowledge to melt down the knifes, along with Rebel Strength’s skills in crafting the best British-made strength equipment to safely manufacture and install the urban gyms. Steel Warriors is dedicated to reducing the number of young people carrying knives in the UK, by providing a free safe space, where they can talk about knife crime and provide a facility to build the physical and mental confidence to walk the streets unarmed. London has had a knife-crime epidemic for years, so the initiative is making a real impact within the communities that they reach. Watch our short video about our work with Steel Warriors The outdoor calisthenics gyms have provided a lifeline for younger people. “It stops kids getting into the gang life and creates a much safer environment for them,” says Alex Thomas Kingham, 20, in the Guardian article, who trains regularly in the outdoor gym. The urban gym has become a core focus for the UK’s up and coming calisthenics movement. Team Instinct, a group of elite athletes who compete in calisthenic events in the UK and abroad, was formed here in the past year. The team has received sponsorship from brands including JD Sports and some of its members, including its blue-haired captain Goku Nsudoh, are racking up hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok. Alloy Fabweld and Rebel Strength have combined our expertise and ability to find solutions for more complex needs and applied these in working with Steel Warriors in the UK. We are proud to have helped by creating a solution that supports the communities in such a impactful way. We can use our expertise to melt down weapons and collaborate with partners to make a positive impact on knife crime. This is also a call to arms for donations or sponsorships to make a larger impact on these social issues in the UK by working with Steel Warriors in key communities. If you or your business, would love to be part of the solution that tackles these real life issues experienced in the communities across the UK, please contact Steel Warriors today. “Steel Warriors is a great charity that are turning a negative into a positive”: Anthony Joshua, OBE, World Champion & Steel Warriors patron. • Alloy Fabweld are Making Bridges Work

Demonstrating some of our diverse bridge projects Through collaboration on the design, manufacture and installation with our partners to ensure safe and successful installation of some recent iconic bridges, we are proud to detail three of our current bridge projects below. GREEN-PRODUCTION OF THE NO.6 SKYBRIDGE EAST VILLAGE STRATFORD Working in collaboration with Mace, Walsh Engineers and McGee Structural Engineers, the bridge connects two residential towers at levels 10-12 on the Mace East Village scheme in Stratford. The sizeable bridge structure is 6m high, 6m wide and 26m long on a 26 degree pitch was fabricated, test assembled and trial lifted by Alloy Fabweld offsite. The bridge was fabricated in two sections, within our 100% ‘Green’ solar energy powered, carbon neutral manufacturing site. The two sections weighing 22 tonne and 39 tonnes respectively, were lifted within required tolerances utilising specialist frames and rigs to help overcome logistical challenges for our client and to make this bridge installation as safe as possible. The bridge glides on specially designed shoes allowing for 106mm ‘X’ axis movement, which is unique to allow for as much wind and gravitational movement as possible. The safe and successful installation of the N0.6 ‘Skybridge’ demonstrates the competency of the Alloy Fabweld Team to deliver challenging and complex projects at height. FLOATING PAVILIONS SAIL INTO K1/K2 WOOD WHARF Floating Pavilions Sail into Canary Wharf produced within our 100% green production facilities. Utilising our expertise and knowledge to design, manufacture and install the new steel structures within the floating concrete bases and adjoining series of bridge, boardwalks and pontoons. The project provides two steel and glass pavilions, fitted out with seating areas and open-ended balconies. In keeping with the Estate’s green credentials and low impact materials, such as sustainably sourced timber and aluminium extracted from hydro sources. The project is based over 5 phases from hull level to roof level and Canary Wharf’s residents, workers and visitors will soon experience these amazing venues. The floating pavilions include a conceptual bar, restaurant and lifestyle venue opening at the end of 2021. The twin structures were towed via the River Thames to their new home; Water Square in the heart of the Estate’s newest waterfront neighbourhood. Designed to reflect both Canary Wharf’s modern urban style and the history of its waterways. The pavilions are part of a long-term sustainable communities that support a healthier future for our cities. NEW PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE WORKS, DOCKLANDS AREA In association with Canary Wharf Contractors, we have collaboratively designed, engineered and are currently manufacturing off site ready for installation, a 26 metre long pedestrian bridge, to allow local residents and workers access across the water, within the dock area. The bridge is being manufactured offsite, on our carbon-neutral off-grid green production facility. The bridge will be constructed in 2 sections for transport to site, at which point it will be fully assembled before being lifted in one piece into position. The bridge itself when installed will be circa 26 metres long x 3.8 metres wide and will weigh 46 Tonne. The bridge has yet to be installed, however as with all schemes of this nature, we continue to deliver this scheme on a collaborative basis and deliver engineering excellence. We have the highest experience and competencies to ensure that this project will be safely and successfully delivered in this unique public environment, reflecting positively on our client's and everyone associated with the scheme. • Sir Robert McAlpine Team to cycle 400 miles to raise funds for Maggie's Cancer Centres

Alloy Fabweld think this is such an amazing cause that we've sponsored SRM the branded Jersey Our client, Sir Robert McAlpine, are generously giving their hard work, time and energy to cycle 100 miles per day, over 4 days, as a group of roughly 40 riders, riding 400 miles, out of London. Each day the SRM team will visit 4 different Maggie's Cancer Centres - the Royal Marsden, Cambridge, Oxford and Southampton. If you are inspired to donate in any way to help others impacted and support the great work of Maggie's, please read down for more details... Maggie’s is a charity providing free cancer support & information centres across the UK and online. The Sir Robert McAlpine team will be speaking with volunteers and understanding what work they are doing to help support individuals and their families who are battling cancer. You can follow the link here to understand more about who Maggies are and what they do. You can sponsor the SRM team with a £1,000 donation for your company branded high viz vest, worn by a rider each day - that represents the equivalent of a leader’s jersey - similarly to a grand tour. This is a great marketing opportunity as the vest will be included in all of the internal SRM communications and will help build your brand within the SRM organisation. This cause aligns with Alloy Fabweld's core values and 'why' at the heart of our business of 'making communities work'. We understand more people are sadly being impacted by issues around cancer, be they a parent, young carer, adult carer, friends, teachers, group leaders and as an employer. Maggie's offers support, information and advice on their website and within their Centre's - so no one has to feel alone in the event of this happening and have the best support in the event this may impact you or someone that you know. Every little helps, the £1,000 jersey sponsorship would be really amazing, but if not, any support you are able to give for the SRM cycle challenge, please do this via Richard's just giving page. "I have seen first-hand the significant impact Maggie’s makes to individuals experiencing a cancer diagnosis. Their beautifully designed centres have an instantly calming effect and the staff are on hand to offer a full range of support." Shona Robison, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport.

  • Cosmopolitan Development of City North, Finsbury Square, London N4

Alloy Fabweld showcase their multiple metal expertise of balconies, balustrades, brise soleil & feature staircases Working collaboratively for 2 years with Telford Homes, Alloy Fabweld utilised their extensive design, manufacture and installation expertise to overcome location access issues, covid shutdown restrictions by carefully managing the build around the clock in order to deliver the project to key deadlines. We enjoyed working with Telford Homes on the design, manufacture and installation of balconies, balustrades, brise soleil, canopies to reduce heat gain and provide a design style to the buildings, privacy screens, cat (access pivot-lock) ladders and the pivotal features of the penthouse staircases. The stairs within the Penthouse feature staircase were sympathetically covered by specialist Timber treads and caps. During the build, in addition to smart engineering solutions to enable the continuous service of the local transport infrastructure, careful optimisation of the design was made to ensure accuracy and minimise disruption. Our approach included ways to overcome restrictive access issues to ensure successful completion, while the project was impacted by Covid restrictions, we worked with our teams around the clock to ensure we delivered to key project deadlines. Great care was taken to logistically reverse articulated lorries into the train station entrance to ensure access and reduce the impact. City North is set across four sleek and stylish buildings including two awe-inspiring towers, the penthouse offers the very best views over Canary Wharf, the City on one side and Hampstead Heath and Alexandra Palace on the other. City North sits to the west of Finsbury Park underground station and runs parallel to a national rail line. The scheme delivered 355 homes, of which 47 affordable homes managed by Newlon Housing Trust, there is also a sizeable space of 11,781 sq.m (126,809 sq.ft) of useable commercial space with large retail brands taking their place. The whole project delivery was carefully considered in terms of its design and construction by the Telford Homes team: the two towers are specifically designed to act as anchoring points for Finsbury Park, an area that has sometimes been considered as somewhere to transit through rather than spend time in which allows City North to become more of a pinnacle location. • Alloy Fabweld Showcase Our Stunning Staircases at Southbank Place

Making staircases work through design, manufacture & installation by our specialist teams Working collaboratively for 3 years with Canary Wharf Contractors and their design team, Alloy Fabweld utilised their extensive design and engineering expertise to overcome complex design issues, and ensured a safe and successful outcome through the trial erection of each stair at works prior to final installation on site. The project benefitted from Alloy Fabweld's expertise in designing spiral and helical staircases. The stairs were designed, crafted and installed complete with complimentary balustrades and handrails aligned to the clients design intent and required aesthetics. Working extensively at Southbank Place, Waterloo, the staircases were installed within blocks 4A, 4B, 6 & 7. Large spiral stairs and balustrades were installed within the reception areas of Blocks 4A & 4B,with smaller spirals and handrails installed within each of the £17M luxury ‘Duplex’ apartments. The Southbank Place scheme took full advantage of Alloy Fabweld's unique ability to roll form spiral and helical stair stringers ‘In House’ to exact and controlled tolerances. Southbank Place is located on the site of the pioneering Festival of Britain which took place in 1951 and was inaugurated by King George VI. The festival was conceived as a celebration across London and the UK to showcase the very best of British talent and vision within design, architecture, art and culture. Focused on London and the South Bank, the festival left a lasting legacy with the opening of the Royal Festival Hall and therefore reinforced the South Bank’s reputation as the epicentre of culture within London. • Making Communities Work

ALLOY FABWELD AND LOCAL COMMUNITY WELLBEING PROJECT IMPACT Alloy Fabweld wanted to support their local community and what better way than to help with a considerable donation of funds for the 'Grow Your Own Giveaway Project'. This is part of Great Dunmow Town Council’s wellbeing project for helping those more vulnerable, by providing them with grow your own food packages. The local community and businesses came together to support this project, local sources were used and there was a great enthusiasm to be involved, with many providing food at no charge or very low cost. The local primary schools have been growing food and gardening as part of their curriculum and because of the provisions provided at the event, they were able to expand their projects further. It is amazing what can be created when local businesses and the community come together to make a difference. This is part of our ethos and our 'Why' of 'Making Communities Work'. The initiative provided seedlings, grow bags, canes and plant food to the residents of Great Dunmow, as part of the project, the Council wanted to engage with residents who are considered vulnerable. Each pack consisted of two grow bags, a tomato plant, another large vegetable plant, along with herbs, spring onions and lettuce, all given for free to help the local community. The council supplemented the grow bags and plants with canes, clips, plant food and provided instruction sheets. This expanded the provision and buy 250 grow bags. Many local residents grew plants from seed to support the initiative as well. "Growing your own plants and food has long been proven as a positive source of nutritional food support and that has great benefits to mental health." Alloy Fabweld always actively look for ways that we can adapt our expertise in 'Making Metal Work' to support Public realm artwork such as the The Dove and Perch community projects that made a true statement and lasting impact within the communities of London and Dunmow. Along with contributing to genuine high impact projects and charities like - Street Warriors, St Clare Hospice and Hashtag Big Smile. All of these causes have our 'why' at the heart to make a difference in areas locally and globally. We also support our local communities by utilising our production facilities on the UK's first carbon-neutral off-grid large-scale engineering facility. • Addressing The Fire Safety Regulations

With our fully-compliant fire-rated non-slip aluminium decking systems Alloy Fabweld have been addressing the positive change in the building regulations on behalf of a number of our clients. We are now engaged in a number of balcony decking upgrade and remediation projects. Working closely with our specialist supply-chain partners to remove and dispose the non-compliant timber and composite decking systems and replacing these with our fully-compliant fire-rated non-slip aluminium decking systems. The recent article in Construction News highlighted how the fire at New Providence Wharf in Poplar was spread due to the 'timber balconies' helping the flames spread from the eighth to the eleventh floor. The biggest change since GrenFell was that the Builiding Safety Bill is creating a Building Safety Regulator within the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The new regulatory body is responsibility to make ‘in-scope’ buildings safer, defined as 'multi-occupied residential buildings of 18 metres or more in height, or more than six storeys'. There is around 13,000 buildings in the remit of the Bill, as these buildings present a higher risk, because fire or structural failure could lead to multiple fatalities. The Bill also introduces an "accountable person" for tall buildings, this will be the owner, the building leaseholder, or the management company. The accountable person’s role will include helping to maintain the information flow between the duty holders at all stages of construction and occupation to avoid major safety lapses. They will also be responsible for ensuring residents’ safety and consulting with them. To enforce the new rules the regulator can introduce sanctions including notices, fines and imprisonment. It will also be responsible for promoting competence among building and maintenance professionals and higher standards across the built environment.
