  • World Architecture Day

Today is World Architecture Day. To celebrate, we are sharing some of the amazing architecture design work that we have worked on and have enjoyed supporting across the UK, over the years. Did you know that the first architectural concept was believed to have been initiated in 2667 BC, by Architect Extraordinaire Imhotep that constructed the Pyramid of Djoser and was one of the first known architects, and the first in Egypt. We are proud to be UK leaders in Architectural Metalwork. With a first-class team specialising in the design, manufacture and installation of high-quality bespoke metalwork projects. Architectural metalwork is a discipline of metalworking that integrates metalwork with architectural structures. Providing form to design inspirations and possibilities, transforming the look and feel of residential and commercial spaces. Kingston University ‘Town House’: has to be one of our favourite projects of 2021, winning the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2021, and formally recognised as the United Kingdom’s best new building in 2021. Utilising our expertise for the bespoke Architectural Metalwork package for this world-class landmark building. Unilever Head Office: This project was awarded The Structural Steel Design Awards, Certificate of Merit. The design incorporated four helical feature stairs within an enclosed glass tube, with an external feature staircase, glazed angular roof trusses representing the Northern Lights when viewed from inside. Crown House, Aldwych: Working with the Architectural Design on the prestigious penthouses. Combining our design and engineering ability to create stunning yet intricate designs to the feature gates to the entrance of Crown House, along with the staircases to the penthouses and a feature glass helical staircase. Aberfeldy Village, Aberfeldy, based in Tower Hamlets London. A large and extensive project over a 12-year plan, in which, we designed and installed canopies, balconies, balustrades, decking, soffits and fascias, undercroft soffits, coping & wire balustrades onto the walkways, winter gardens, and car park gates. Forming part of the complete regeneration project, the village will boast 1176 homes, shops, healthcare, and community facilities within a seven-acre site. Victory Place, East Village, Stratford E20. Originally Olympic Village from the summer London games of 2012, East Village is the conversion of a vibrant neighbourhood attracting people of all ages and interests to this hippest corner of East London, with its unique offering of retailers, exciting events and great community activities. A challenging project, we overcame with our expertise in the design, manufacture, and installation of glass and Juliette balconies together with the complete building exterior. Providing much needed support to limbless and injured veterans Alloy Fabweld Group CEO, Bill Williams, and Group MD, Shaun Pledger, cycled 160 miles from Dunmow, to Ypres, Belgium, with the Dunmow Round Table. The Ride was in support of Blesma, for Limbless Veterans and their families. This was no small feat for some of the team, that was not used to cycling this kind of distance. Ypres was also commemorated in 1920 by King George V, who awarded the Military Cross to the City of Ypres, one of only two awards of this decoration to a municipality during World War I. The cycle ride raised much-needed funds for Blesma, whose mission is to assist limbless veterans to lead independent and fulfilling lives. They are dedicated to assisting serving and ex-Service men and women who have suffered life-changing limb loss or the use of a limb, an eye, or, loss of sight in the service of our country. Blesma has been supporting limbless men and women veterans and their families and their communities throughout the UK Since 1932 and they are the only national Armed Forces Charity that supports limbless veterans for the duration of their lives. Alloy Fabweld was proud to support the annual Weston Homes Golf Day which raised vital funds for St Claire Hospice, a charity close to the heart of the AF Group. Joining forces with other businesses across the industry, along with our sister company, Flexi Group UK, together raising a staggering £150,000 in aid of local charity St Clare Hospice at the Weston Homes annual Golf Day. £150,000 pays for 238 days’ worth of care for a patient in the Inpatient Unit at St Clare. Alloy Fabweld are long-standing charitable partners of the West Essex and East Hertfordshire hospice and have raised considerable sums for the charity through different events and activities. Sponsored and attended by 44 individual teams from other local companies, the Golf Day raised an incredible sum in vital funding this year for St Clare Hospice, which will go towards their specialist, compassionate palliative care for local people living with a life-limiting illness in West Essex and East Herts. On the day, guests and golfers played the prestigious venue at The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield, finishing with a charity auction and fine-dining, in which guests bid generously for top prizes – including prestigious golf breaks, Newmarket tickets, signed sports memorabilia, amongst other impressive prizes. St Clare Director of Income Generation and Marketing, Rosie Knowles said: “Every year, we are completely humbled by the staggering sum of money that is raised at the Weston Homes’ Golf Day – and the figure continues to surprise everyone each year! £150,000 is a truly significant sum of money and is enough to fund more than 230 days’ worth of care for a patient in the specialist Inpatient Unit at St Clare. Vital care which enables family members to become husbands, wives, sons, and daughters again, rather than carers.” Shaun Pledger shared: “We are proud to support St Clare Hospice, they play a vital role for the local community, supporting thousands of people and their families every year”. The past few years have been particularly difficult, especially in the healthcare and charity sector. St Clare Hospice has been able to continue to care thanks to the incredible support of businesses, individuals, volunteers, and care teams working at the hospice. St Claire Hospice works tirelessly around the clock to care for people in our local community. St Clare Hospice works tirelessly to help others when a family member falls unwell, providing important services not provided by the NHS. It costs over £ 4 million each year to provide these vital services free of charge to those living with life-limiting illnesses now and in the future every penny does count. • Magnificent Remembrance Memorial unveiled at St Paul’s Cathedral

The ‘Remember Me’ portico memorial has been installed in memory of those lives that were lost directly, or indirectly during the pandemic. Providing a space where people can come together to share memories and honour those that passed. The inner portico is the first addition to the London landmark in 150 years, made possible by campaigns by the BBC and Daily Mail. Celebrities and business leaders generously supported the campaign including Sir Lloyd Dorfman and Lord Alan Sugar that generously donated to its creation. The ‘Remember Me’ memorial provides a special and lasting space for remembrance of all lives lost. The new inner portico will be a focal point in the cathedral’s north transept, within a wooden atrium. The portico is elliptical in design and engraved with the words ‘Remember Me’ in several languages. Alloy Fabweld designed, manufactured, and installed the support steelwork for this important cause, in collaboration with Sir Robert McAlpine. Co-designed by Caroe Architecture with Connolly Wellingham, creating a beautiful, elliptical timber structure all crafted in the UK and made with British Oak. Etched into the wood in gold letters are the words ‘Remember Me’, of the people who have died due to the pandemic. The elegant design is a modern addition, designed with respect to its iconic surroundings and to reflect the geometric design of St. Paul's by Christopher Wren. Pictures: Courtesy of Sir Robert McAlpine. Part of this unique memorial is the Remember Me online book of remembrance, started in 2020, that contains photos, names, and memories of those who have passed, within the Middlesex Chapel, displayed across several digital screens. The memorial is for everyone from all the UK nations and of any faith or none, it will leave a legacy for many people to visit over the years to provide a contemplative space and celebrate the lives of lost ones. The Remember Me is to enable families, friends, and carers to remember and mourn those who have died, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The online book of remembrance is open to people of all faiths or none and remains open for entries for as long as is needed. The national memorial will be free to enter too. Visitors will be able to light candles or sit and contemplate. The cathedral has been for centuries a place where significant national events have been prayed for and remembered. Prince Charles gave his backing for the project in a video message: ‘People of every faith and none believe that each human being is unique and precious’. Leaders from all faiths have also endorsed the project, calling the memorial a ‘focal point for our collective grief. Those wishing to remember loved ones can submit, free of charge, the name, photograph, and a short message in honour of a deceased person via the Remember Me website www.rememberme2020.uk

  • Bermondsey Balconies, Crimscott Street - London Square

Alloy Fabweld worked closely with London Square, the main developer of the master plan, to reinvigorate the area and redevelop the buildings by providing a look and feel to complement the heritage of the buildings. Alloy Fabweld enjoyed applying our specialist approach to craft the 30 external balconies' to complement the overall aesthetics of the new build design of the London Square development. With our design, manufacture, and installation of the external balconies, along with the careful refurbishment and restoration of the 100 internal balconies. This was all part of an overall masterplan to reinvigorate the area and redevelop the buildings by providing a look and feel to complement the heritage of the buildings, whilst, at the same time, creating a contemporary modern style that is fitting with the overall regeneration. London Square Bermondsey, is located in a vibrant area of the Capital, this exciting new community of homes features new garden squares and walkways, plus a 24-hour concierge and on-site gym. Offering a quick walk to buzzing Bermondsey Street and London Bridge Station. Scooping the prestigious Silver Award in the Best Apartment Scheme category at 2021 WhatHouse? Awards. The judges' of the award highlighted the pivotal role that the development is playing in the wider regeneration of the SE1 area. Creating this landmark living design across three heritage and contemporary buildings holding 1-3 bedroom apartments and duplexes. London Square Bermondsey is a new £220m neighbourhood, providing homes, flexible workspaces, and art studios in a collection of former industrial and modern buildings. The development opens up the 4.7-acre site of the former Rich Industrial Estate, which was previously home to a tannery and the Crosse & Blackwell Branston pickle factory, creating new squares, open green spaces, and walkways connecting the site to surrounding streets. The restoration and conversion of the original Tannery building, which dates from the 1920s and is a fine example of industrial architecture. It will also provide new premises for Tannery Arts, an independent charity based in Bermondsey since 1993, which nurtures new artists and makes contemporary art accessible to the public through exhibitions and educational projects. Working closely with the community and Southwark Council, a hybrid planning permission scheme was created to develop the Rich Industrial Estate into a mixed-use development including new homes, workspace, an art gallery, and public open space. The development is now referred to as London Square Bermondsey. The Bermondsey regeneration reinvigorates a run-down and disjointed industrial estate in central London, that held many vacant and under-used buildings with historic value back into use. The site has some of the last remaining examples of buildings for the tannery trade, an industry that defined Bermondsey in the 19th and early 20th Century. The scheme refurbishes these existing buildings and supplements them with new ones to provide new commercial, retail and residential uses. Providing more than 400 new homes, 35% of which will be affordable and social housing, with a new commercial hub of 20,000 sq.m dedicated to small and medium-sized enterprises. The green spaces enable the land to be renewed that was previously contaminated by centuries of industrial use. The new landscape will see the planting of more than 100 trees across the site and the creation of new public and private open planted spaces. About the partners for London Square, Bermondsey: London Square, are committed to creating exceptional properties that reflect the aspirations of our residents, stimulate thriving communities, and set a new benchmark for modern living in the capital. They have an excellent track record of delivering great services in Southwark with popular developments in Bermondsey Village and Canada Water. The architects that worked on the design, imagining, and delivery of London Square are Allford Hall Monaghan Morris were supported by Coffey Architects and Studio Egret West Architects. In collaboration with The Drawing Room/Tannery Arts and Southwark Studios, who have been part of the site in London Square for the past 20 years and with whom the design team has collaborated on parts of the scheme to develop a greater sense of place within the surrounding environment. We showcase our engineering excellence and years of expertise in managing specialist teams to deliver the impressive Mackenzie Bridge, weighing 46 tons and all fully installed on-site in just 5 hours at Canary Wharf. The modular bridge solution was made possible through our expert engineering techniques within our large-scale, carbon-neutral, off-grid manufacturing facility. In partnership with SPS Technology, City Lifting, and Thortech Bridges and Marine, through to the final installation by our expert team, with assistance from VTS, providing a floating work platform/pontoon and a safety boat. Part of the redevelopment of the Park Place site, located on West India Avenue, contributes to the wider regeneration of the western end of Canary Wharf by introducing improved connections, public spaces, and amenities, in which we enjoyed working with Canary Wharf Contractors. All welding of the bridge components was carried out by fully coded welders, with all welded parts of the bridge weld tested to the highest standards. Due to the more challenging elements in the environment, the bridge will be exposed to, we used the highest quality protective finishes. The applications included: shot-blasting for optimal adherence and zinc spraying to provide the highest grade corrosion resistance, specifically designed for use in marine settings. SPS Technology, our strategic partner, provided their Sandwich Plate System, (SPS) consisting of two metal plates bonded with Elastocore®, providing the best solution to meet the required bridge movement, tension, compression, shear, bending, and any combination thereof. SPS brings structural simplicity and delivers a far lighter and thinner structural element than a conventional concrete slab. All SPS panels have an extended fatigue life, that is fully recyclable and reusable. City Lifting, our trusted specialist large crane provider, helped deliver the test lifting of the bridge, before final transportation. Lifting the main bridge support beams and SPS landing plates with accurate positioning within the bridge structure. Our experienced site managers worked closely with City Lifting to ensure the safest and least disruptive installation for this busy Canary Wharf area. Thortech Bridges and Marine, provided specialist supply and installation of their Thorgrip anti-skid system, providing optimal safety to the public. A safety boat closely followed the bridge as it was manoeuvred into position, the crane carefully lifted the bridge and lowered it into its final position all within an impressive 5 hours. • Beautiful & Elegant Public Art for Berwick Street

Berwick Street, Soho, London This beautiful and intricately designed piece of Public Art was crafted with great care and intensely finite detail in its overall creation for Berwick Street. Many months of planning and work resulted in these eye-catching decorative paneled gates, which demonstrates that with the right intent and approach, exquisite designs that can be created from high-quality stainless steel. The stunning design was the original thought-piece by Artist, Tom Gallant, for Latitude Architects & PMB Holdings at Berwick Street, Soho, London. Our design and manufacture teams at Alloy Fabweld worked diligently and intently to ensure that these beautiful panels were crafted with great care and attention through our design, and planning, ensuring the attentive application of the design was diligently managed through our specialist punch machines. Our priority was to ensure that the development of the design onto the steel would truly bring to life the designer's concept in the greatest possible way, to portray the important meaning and heritage of this site for Berwick Street along with adding distinction to the aesthetics of the building itself. To create these delightfully decorative perforated panels for the new residential building development in Berwick Street, Soho, London. The core imagery within the concept design was sourced from Huguenot artists and artisans; Daniel Marot, James Leman, Paul de Lamerie, and Jean Monnoyer. The fusion of concepts intertwines architecture, decorative design, engraving, weaving, painting artistry, and silversmith depicting elements from all of the combined skills of these artists. The design was inspired by the heritage of the two Huguenot churches, La Patente and St Luke’s... The design was to embody and honour the history of migrants and refugees and the rich tapestry created from the ongoing interacting and changing community that spanned the District of St. Luke, Westminster. The design was inspired by the heritage of the two Huguenot churches, La Patente and St Luke’s, the Huguenots fled from mainland Europe to London. The design was to embody and honour the history of migrants and refugees and the rich tapestry created from the ongoing interacting and changing community that spanned the District of St. Luke, Westminster. Clever in the application, we used the impressions of these designs in the steel, which created a sense of movement around the building, and the levels and individual panels. The design was a combination of elements, from the symbol of the rainbow and the mathematical language behind Jazz, stemming from impressions of Slavery and the African descendants who also came to these churches. By using geometries created in the motif design on the individual panels as a method to link Berwick and Hopkins Street with the overall design, where the churches would have stood in their full beauty years before. The choice of the visual materials is to reflect both the interior and exterior, from the inspiration of the wallpaper and stained glass windows that would have been present in the original building design and architecture. Alloy Fabweld applied this intricate design with residual perforation of varying shapes and sizes to create the overall aesthetic look and feel - this specialist application enables the metal to reflect shards of light to the frontage of the building to enhance the overall development style. This approach demonstrates what is possible with stainless steel specialist techniques for enhancing the overall look and feel of building structures. The Berwick Street development is part of a major mixed-use scheme redevelopment in the heart of London’s West End, Soho. You can read more about the inspiring design from Tom Gallent for Berwick Street here : https://www.tom-gallant.com/berwick-street-2 For your Public Art Projects, please contact the team who are ready to discuss how we can create inspiring work together on 01371 878 600, or email info@alloyfabweld.com Delivering the best-value safe-solutions for our clients: Designing - Manufacturing - Distributing Sustainably-Engineered Products at our 100% Green off-grid production facilities
