A positive step towards a stronger, more secure and sustainable future for UK steelmaking
Alloy Fabweld has welcomed the UK Government’s decision to bring British Steel into public ownership, describing the move as an important step towards protecting the country’s industrial capabilities, skilled workforce and long-term economic security.
The decision safeguards one of the UK’s most strategically important manufacturers and helps preserve the country’s ability to produce steel domestically. British Steel’s Scunthorpe operations include the UK’s last remaining blast furnaces, making the business an essential part of the national steel supply chain.
For Alloy Fabweld, its customers and the wider construction and manufacturing industries, the announcement provides an opportunity to build a more resilient UK steel sector capable of supporting future infrastructure, housing, transport, defence and regeneration projects.

Greater confidence in the UK supply chain
The immediate change in ownership will not result in overnight reductions in steel prices or remove every challenge facing the industry. Steel costs will continue to be affected by energy prices, raw material costs, global demand, currency movements and international trade.
However, bringing British Steel into public ownership creates a more stable foundation for long-term planning and investment.
Maintaining domestic steelmaking capacity can reduce the UK’s reliance on overseas producers and make supply chains less vulnerable to international disruption, shipping delays and changing trade conditions. Over time, this could give contractors, manufacturers and developers greater confidence when planning major projects and placing long-term orders.
A stronger domestic steel industry could also support improved product availability, clearer material traceability and closer working relationships between steelmakers, stockholders, fabricators and project teams.
For Alloy Fabweld’s customers, the greatest potential benefit is therefore not an immediate promise of cheaper steel, but the prospect of a more dependable, transparent and resilient supply chain.
Protecting skilled jobs and industrial knowledge
British Steel supports thousands of jobs directly, as well as many more throughout its supply chain and surrounding communities. Protecting these roles also protects specialist knowledge and technical skills that have been developed over generations.
Once those skills and facilities are lost, they are extremely difficult and costly to rebuild.
Continued investment in British steelmaking can support apprenticeships, engineering careers and manufacturing employment across the country. It can also give younger people greater confidence that advanced manufacturing has a meaningful future in the UK.
As a British manufacturer, Alloy Fabweld understands the value of retaining these skills and creating opportunities for the next generation of welders, fabricators, designers, engineers and project managers.

An opportunity to invest in cleaner steelmaking
Public ownership also creates an opportunity to establish a clear, long-term plan for modernising British Steel and reducing the environmental impact of UK steel production.
Producing steel domestically does not automatically make every project lower carbon. However, investment in modern technology, more efficient production methods, renewable energy and lower-carbon steelmaking could significantly improve the environmental performance of the industry over time.
Greater access to responsibly produced British steel could help customers understand where their materials have come from and provide stronger evidence when reporting embodied carbon, responsible sourcing and wider environmental, social and governance commitments.
Where suitable UK-produced materials can replace imports, there may also be opportunities to reduce the emissions and logistical impacts associated with transporting steel over very long distances.
Building Britain with British expertise
Alloy Fabweld believes the nationalisation of British Steel should be seen as the beginning of a long-term industrial strategy rather than a short-term intervention.
The next stage must focus on investment, modernisation, competitive energy costs, responsible procurement and ensuring that British-made steel is considered for major publicly funded projects wherever it is technically and commercially suitable.
Alloy Fabweld will continue working with its customers, suppliers and project partners to deliver high-quality architectural metalwork, structural solutions and specialist fabrication for projects throughout the UK.

Shaun Pledger, Managing Director of Alloy Fabweld, said:
“We warmly welcome the decision to bring British Steel back into public ownership. Protecting our ability to produce steel here in the UK is about much more than one company or one manufacturing site. It is about protecting skilled jobs, supporting communities and maintaining the industrial capability needed to build the country’s future.“Our customers need supply chains they can trust. Although nationalisation will not change steel prices or availability overnight, it creates an opportunity to invest for the long term and reduce the UK’s exposure to international disruption.“With the right strategy, we could see a stronger, more modern and increasingly sustainable steel industry supporting British construction and manufacturing for generations. Alloy Fabweld is proud to be part of that wider industry, transforming steel into the buildings, infrastructure and architectural features people use every day.”
