Southbank Place Feature Staircase
Canary Wharf Contractors, London
The works included large spiral staircases and balustrades within the reception areas of Blocks 4A and 4B, helping create elegant arrival spaces within the luxury residential buildings. Smaller spiral staircases and handrails were also installed within the high-end duplex apartments, where the staircases acted as both functional links between levels and carefully crafted design features.
Each staircase was designed, manufactured and installed complete with complementary balustrades and handrails, aligned to the client’s design intent and required aesthetic. To ensure accuracy and quality before delivery to site, Alloy Fabweld trial-erected each staircase at its works, allowing the team to check fit, finish and performance before final installation.
A key strength of the project was Alloy Fabweld’s in-house capability to roll-form large-scale spiral and helical stair stringers to exact and controlled tolerances. This gave the team greater control over quality, programme and detail, reducing reliance on external suppliers and helping to resolve complex design challenges efficiently.
The wider Southbank Place development sits on a site with deep cultural significance, closely linked to the Festival of Britain and the South Bank’s long-standing role as a centre for architecture, design and the arts. Alloy Fabweld’s staircases supported this sense of design ambition, adding crafted, sculptural elements to a development defined by quality, movement and contemporary urban living.
Alloy Fabweld’s contribution to Southbank Place demonstrates their ability to deliver highly complex bespoke staircases for luxury residential environments. Through collaborative design, precision fabrication, trial erection and careful installation, the team helped create refined architectural features that bring both function and visual impact to one of London’s leading riverside developments.
"Alloy Fabweld delivered the Southbank Place staircase package with exceptional technical skill and attention to detail. Their ability to design, manufacture, trial-erect and install complex spiral and helical staircases gave us complete confidence in the finished result, creating elegant, high-quality features across the development."

Southbank Place is one of London’s most prestigious riverside developments, transforming the former Shell Centre site into a new mixed-use destination beside the Thames. Located next to Waterloo Station and moments from the London Eye, the development brings together luxury homes, offices, retail, leisure spaces, cultural uses and new public areas within one of the capital’s most recognisable settings.
Alloy Fabweld worked collaboratively with Canary Wharf Contractors and their design team for three years, delivering a specialist staircase and balustrade package across Blocks 4A, 4B, 6 and 7. The project required a high level of design development, engineering coordination and manufacturing accuracy, particularly due to the complexity of the spiral and helical staircase forms.
