Gasholder Refurbishment, Fulham

St William, Fulham

Alloy Fabweld was appointed to provide a carefully planned restoration methodology that combined traditional heritage sensitivity with modern engineering control. The project included the collection of key structural components from site, their safe transportation to Alloy Fabweld’s Gosfield facility, detailed restoration works, and the planned integration of new and existing steelwork to support the long-term stability and future use of the structure.

The works required a high level of precision from the outset. Detailed surveys, component identification, tagging and quality assurance procedures were used to record and track each element before removal. This ensured that the original structure could be dismantled, refurbished and reinstalled with accuracy, while maintaining full traceability throughout the process.

At Alloy Fabweld’s Gosfield facility, the historic steelwork could be inspected, repaired, blasted, treated and finished within a controlled workshop environment. This allowed the team to manage the restoration with greater accuracy, safety and quality control than would have been possible through site works alone.

A key challenge was the careful integration of new and existing steelwork. The restored heritage components needed to retain their original character while meeting strict modern structural and safety criteria. This required detailed fabrication, careful alignment and close coordination between the design, workshop and site teams.

The Gasholder Refurbishment demonstrates Alloy Fabweld’s ability to deliver complex heritage restoration works where safety, accuracy and conservation value are equally important. By combining specialist fabrication, controlled restoration and sensitive handling of historic materials, Alloy Fabweld helped protect a significant industrial landmark for future generations.

"Alloy Fabweld approached the Gasholder Refurbishment with exceptional care, precision and technical understanding. Their ability to manage the removal, restoration and integration of historic and new steelwork gave us complete confidence in the preservation of this important heritage structure."

Restoration

The Gasholder Refurbishment in Fulham represents one of Alloy Fabweld’s most technically demanding heritage restoration projects, focused on the careful dismantling, refurbishment and reinstallation of a prominent industrial structure at the former Fulham Gasworks site.

Located within the Kings Road Park development, the historic gasholder forms an important part of the area’s industrial past. The structure is Grade II* listed and is recognised as a rare surviving example of early gasholder engineering, making its preservation a key part of the wider redevelopment vision.
