Eighty Strand, Covent Garden Riverside
London
The transformation focused on opening up the building and creating brighter, more welcoming spaces for occupiers and visitors. A new glass Pavilion, remodelled reception, café, lobby areas and Glasshouse Garden helped turn previously enclosed spaces into light-filled communal areas designed around comfort, wellbeing and connection.
Alloy Fabweld played an important role in this refurbishment, providing a comprehensive structural steel and architectural metalwork package to support the reimagined building. Their work included bridge reinforcement around the newly opened space, helping to create the café and bar area and connect new floor levels through the building.
The team also crafted the feature balustrade for the main reception, carefully matching the existing style and finish to sit in keeping with the bronze effect used throughout the building. Specialist water jet cutting technology was used to achieve the intricate detailing required, creating a smooth, elegant finish that complements the building’s Art Deco features.
Further works included the careful cleaning and refurbishment of support beams following concrete removal, with updated fire protection coating applied to bring these elements in line with current standards. Alloy Fabweld also designed, manufactured and installed stainless steel balustrade with a polished stainless steel handrail for the first-floor safety feature, supporting both safety and visual quality within the newly transformed atrium.
To complete the package, Alloy Fabweld supplied new fire and roller shutters for the car park entrance, along with cladding designed to match the overall sympathetic refurbishment of the building.
The Eighty Strand project demonstrates Alloy Fabweld’s ability to work within prestigious heritage settings where new structural and architectural interventions must respect existing character. Through careful fabrication, detailed finishing and sensitive integration, the team helped support the transformation of a historic London landmark into a modern, flexible and welcoming workplace.
"Alloy Fabweld delivered a detailed and sensitive metalwork package for Eighty Strand. Their work on the structural reinforcement, feature balustrades, refurbished support beams, shutters and cladding showed real craftsmanship and technical understanding, helping to transform this landmark building while respecting its historic character."

Eighty Strand is one of London’s most recognisable riverside landmarks, a Grade II listed Art Deco building formerly known as Shell-Mex House. Positioned between Covent Garden, the Strand and the Thames, the building has been reimagined as a contemporary workplace while retaining the character and presence that make it such an important part of London’s architectural heritage.
