Deptford Station
Volker Fitzpatrick, London
The project required careful coordination within a live rail environment, with the existing station remaining operational during the works. This meant the metalwork package had to be delivered with close attention to safety, access, sequencing and passenger movement, while supporting the wider programme to improve accessibility and modernise the station.
The stainless steel clad lift cores and stairs played an important role in improving step-free access between the station entrance and platforms, helping to create a more inclusive and practical passenger experience. The platform canopies and roof works provided improved weather protection, while the aluminium soffit and bespoke bullnose detailing added a crisp, well-finished architectural edge to the upgraded station environment.
Alloy Fabweld’s balustrades, stairs, lift core cladding and glazing support helped bring together the practical and visual requirements of the scheme. Each element had to be robust enough for a busy public transport setting while also contributing to the clean, modern appearance of the new station.
The redevelopment of Deptford Station successfully balanced heritage, regeneration and improved passenger facilities. Alloy Fabweld’s contribution demonstrates their ability to deliver complex architectural metalwork within operational transport environments, combining durability, precision and high-quality finishes on a project of real local significance.
"Alloy Fabweld delivered a high-quality architectural metalwork package for Deptford Station. Their work on the stairs, lift cores, canopies, balustrades and roof details was completed with precision and professionalism, helping to modernise an important historic station while supporting safe and improved passenger access."

Deptford Station is one of London’s most historically important transport sites, recognised as the capital’s oldest passenger railway station and positioned within an important conservation area. Its redevelopment formed a key part of the wider regeneration of Deptford High Street and the surrounding town centre, improving passenger facilities while respecting the station’s heritage setting.
Alloy Fabweld was appointed by Volker Fitzpatrick to deliver a £5.1 million architectural metalwork package as part of the station redevelopment. The works included the supply and installation of steel stairs, roof works with aluminium soffit incorporating a bespoke bullnose feature, two stainless steel clad lift cores with stairs, a planar glazed wall, platform canopies and various stainless steel balustrades.
