Bedford Riverside

Bouygues, Bedford

The development brought together new riverside apartments, restaurants, leisure facilities, a seven-screen cinema, a 100-bedroom hotel, public realm improvements and improved pedestrian connections. Its location beside the river made the quality of the external spaces especially important, with balconies, balustrades and boundary metalwork all playing a key role in shaping the appearance and experience of the completed scheme.

Alloy Fabweld was appointed by Bouygues to deliver an £800k architectural metalwork package for the project. Their scope included the design, manufacture and installation of balconies, glass balustrades, louvred gates and cabled handrails, each carefully detailed to suit the mixed-use setting and riverside location.

The balconies and glass balustrades provided residents with private external spaces while protecting views across the River Great Ouse and the surrounding townscape. Their clean, contemporary finish helped reinforce the development’s modern character while supporting safety, durability and everyday use.

Alloy Fabweld also delivered louvred gates and cabled handrails, adding practical security, access control and circulation support across the scheme. These elements were designed to integrate with the wider architectural metalwork package, helping to create a consistent and well-finished environment throughout the development.

Working on a prominent town centre regeneration project required careful coordination, accurate fabrication and a clear understanding of how each metalwork element would contribute to the wider public and residential experience. Alloy Fabweld’s contribution helped complete Bedford Riverside with a polished, durable and visually coherent finish, supporting the creation of a new leisure and residential destination for the town.

"Alloy Fabweld delivered a high-quality architectural metalwork package for Bedford Riverside. Their work on the balconies, glass balustrades, louvred gates and cabled handrails was completed with precision and professionalism, helping to create a safe, attractive and well-integrated finish for this important town centre regeneration project."

Bedford Riverside forms part of the wider Riverside North regeneration, a major mixed-use development created to bring new life to Bedford town centre. Positioned on the banks of the River Great Ouse, close to the historic centre and St Mary’s Gardens, the scheme transformed a previously underused riverside site into a lively destination for residents, visitors and the local community.
