  • Alloy Fabweld: Pioneering Sustainable Manufacturing at Scale

At Alloy Fabweld, we take immense pride in being a leading UK manufacturer specialising in metal architecture for tall building structures, with a primary focus on modular construction. With a rich history of consistently delivering high-quality projects on time and within budget, we recognise that our commitment to sustainability is paramount in all our operations. Our Sustainable Oasis: Gosfield, Essex Our main production facility is nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Gosfield, Essex. Here, the site adjacent to our expansive production facilities has been developed into one of the UK's first carbon-neutral off-grid large-scale manufacturing facilities, allowing us to run our operations at the site on renewable energy, setting a standard for the industry. Harvesting the Power of the Sun: Solar Farm Our sustainability journey begins with our energy source - an expansive solar farm adjacent to our facility. This remarkable solar farm was developed on low-productivity agricultural land and boasts an array of 44,976 solar panels. These panels are strategically positioned to allow animal grazing, support plant life, and preserve natural habitats. Each panel has the impressive capacity to produce up to 11.47MWp of clean renewable electricity annually, equivalent to powering approximately 3,545 homes. Moreover, we are proud to say that all of our electrical consumption in our engineering and manufacturing operations at our Gosfield facility is met through this green energy supply. This choice ensures that we operate as environmentally efficiently as possible, and it will enable us to save a remarkable 165,000 tonnes of carbon over the next 25 years. Harnessing the Power of Waste: Anaerobic Digester But our commitment to green energy doesn't stop with solar power. In addition solar farm, there is an on-site anaerobic digestion plant. This innovative facility efficiently converts organic waste into biogas, a clean and renewable energy source. The biogas is then used to generate electricity and heat, contributing towards powering our energy requirements. The organic matter that fuels this process, such as maize, grass, and whole-crop cereal, is primarily sourced from local farms. However, the environmental benefits extend beyond energy production. The anaerobic digestion process leaves behind 3,000 tonnes of organic fertiliser, which we thoughtfully spread onto local farmland. This practice not only enriches the soil but also replaces fossil fuel-derived fertilisers, saving five tonnes of carbon for every ton of Nitrogen. In essence, the Anaerobic Digester facility at the Gosfield site isn't just a power generator; it's a catalyst for sustainability. It provides power for site's production facilities at night and fulfills some of the on-site factory's heat requirements. Any surplus electricity the site generates flows back into the grid, benefiting the local community. A Commitment to Continuous Improvement At Alloy Fabweld, sustainability isn't a static achievement; it's an ongoing journey. We're dedicated to continuous research and development, tirelessly seeking innovative ways to make our products even more sustainable. This commitment is reflected in our use of the DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) methodology, which not only reduces waste but also enhances efficiency in production. Empowering Clients in Sustainability Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our operations. We firmly believe in empowering our clients to reduce their environmental footprint. With our range of modular construction solutions, we enable businesses to minimise energy consumption and cut carbon emissions. Our projects, which range from £3-£10 million and include iconic structures like the K1 Floating Pavilions in Battersea and the Embassy Gardens development in Nine Elms, showcase our expertise and dedication to sustainable construction. Building a Greener Future Together Our journey toward sustainability doesn't stop at reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency. It's about improving air quality, promoting biodiversity, and fostering positive community relations. By choosing Alloy Fabweld as your sustainable manufacturing partner, you're not just making a business decision; you're contributing to the creation of a more sustainable future. In conclusion, Alloy Fabweld is not just a manufacturer; we're visionary leaders in sustainable manufacturing. Strategically located in the active hub of Central Milton Keynes, a new architectural gem has emerged - Unity Place, Santander's vibrant workplace campus and UK headquarters. This state-of-the-art building, shortlisted for a prestigious global architecture award, was designed by LOM and Osborne+Co., and it embodies the spirit of unity and collaboration. Uniting Design and Contrast Drawing inspiration from Spanish design influences, the staircases at Unity Place boast an exceptional blend of elegance and contrast. Crafted using English Oak and adorned with stunning steel handrails, they exude a timeless appeal. The sections were then transported to Unity Place, where they were carefully lifted through the atrium roof void for final installation. Atrium Splendor The atrium at Unity Place plays a pivotal role in the building's overall design concept. It allows natural light to permeate into the building, creating an inviting and refreshing atmosphere. The extensive floor-to-ceiling exterior glazing further maximizes breathtaking views and connects the occupants with the surrounding environment. Adding a touch of architectural finesse, the atrium features open trusses and decorative balustrades, showcasing Alloy Fabweld's attention to detail and commitment to delivering a truly remarkable space. Milton Keynes' Urban Legacy Unity Place pays homage to Milton Keynes' visionary urban planning heritage. The building's design, housing the exquisite staircases, reflects the city's iconic grid structure. This unique integration enhances the building's aesthetic appeal and complements the surrounding landscape. A Center of Innovation and Well-being As Santander's hub for digital banking innovation, Unity Place is more than just a workplace. It symbolizes a commitment to staff well-being and community engagement. With 5,000 workstations spread across its eight stories, the building offers a collaborative and nurturing environment. • Prioritising Mental Health in Construction: Insights & Tips for Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

Mental Health Awareness Week is an important initiative that aims to shed light on the significance of mental well-being in all aspects of life, including the workplace. In an industry known for its demanding and high-pressure nature, construction workers often face challenges that can impact their mental health. As we observe Mental Health Awareness Week 2023, it is crucial to foster a culture of support, understanding, and awareness within the construction sector. In this post, we will explore valuable advice and tips to promote mental health in the construction industry along with some examples we foster in our own business. 2.1m employees have taken sick leave caused by construction workplace stress According to a new study, 8 out of 10 employees in the UK have taken sick leave caused by construction workplace stress and poor mental health. The findings conducted as part of the ‘Make Chat Work’ campaign found that over half of industry workers (53%) left the job due to construction workplace stress. The report comes after more stringent mental health provisions in construction contracts have been recommended. Although stress levels are high, respondents recognised the importance of talking about mental health. Data from the ‘Make Chat Work’ campaign revealed that 74% of construction workers said they talk to colleagues about problems at work. 96% of respondents said that talking to colleagues helps to relieve pressures at work. This is an encouraging sign that people in our industry feel that they can chat and seek support. Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 provides an opportunity to focus on mental well-being in the construction industry. By recognising the signs, fostering open communication, providing resources, and promoting work-life balance, we can create a supportive environment that prioritises mental health. Let us strive to break down stigmas, raise awareness, and empower construction workers to take care of their mental well-being, not only during this awareness week but throughout the year. Together, we can build a healthier and more resilient construction industry. Poor mental health at work cost UK employers £56bn in 2020-21. Research from Deloitte revealed the cost to employers increased to £56bn in 2020-21, an £11bn increase compared to £45bn in 2019. Poor mental health doesn’t discriminate; it can affect anyone whether you’re a business owner, manager, or starting out in your career. People may face different stresses within the workplace, but the outcome is the same – it can take its toll and result in serious mental health issues. Stress, anxiety, and depression account for a fifth of all work-related illnesses, and every single working day in the UK, two construction workers take their own life. At Alloy Fabweld we see how important it is to spread awareness and support, we hope this blog provides some help for our employees and colleagues in our industry. 1. Recognise the Signs: It is vital to familiarize yourself with common signs of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress in yourself and your colleagues. Be attentive to changes in behaviour, mood swings, increased absenteeism, or diminished productivity. Recognizing these signs early on can allow for timely intervention and support. 2. Encourage Open Communication: Create an environment that promotes open dialogue about mental health. Encourage workers to share their feelings, concerns, and experiences without fear of judgment or reprisal. Provide safe spaces for discussions, such as regular team meetings or designated mental health support groups. Promote active listening and empathy to foster a sense of belonging and emotional well-being. 3. Mental Health Resources: Collaborate with healthcare providers to offer workshops, training sessions, or confidential counselling services. Share information about local mental health support networks and helplines that workers can reach out to for assistance. We provide a support service through Health Assured, which has free resources and support calls for those that need that bit of help. 4. Promote Work-Life Balance: The construction industry often demands long hours and high workloads, which can contribute to burnout and mental strain. Encourage workers to establish a healthy work-life balance by promoting breaks, rest days, and reasonable work hours. Encourage hobbies, exercise, and time spent with family and friends to nurture overall well-being. Alloy Fabweld provides a pot of money for teams to wind down after work on a Friday. 5. Foster Supportive Relationships: Nurture a culture of camaraderie and support among workers. Encourage team-building activities, celebrate accomplishments, and provide opportunities for social interaction. Strong support networks can enhance resilience and create an atmosphere where individuals feel comfortable seeking help when needed. We hold team-building events and we recently carried out values workshops to understand and support our teams. 7. Lead by Example: Leaders and managers play a crucial role in shaping the work environment, it is important that we demonstrate empathy, compassion, and understanding when dealing with mental health concerns. Lead by example by practicing self-care, promoting work-life balance, and openly discussing mental health. 8. Regularly Evaluate and Adapt: Continuously assess the effectiveness of mental health initiatives within the construction industry. Collect feedback from workers, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments. Regularly evaluate the impact of mental health programs and measure progress over time.

  • Sparking Careers for Our Next Generation

Investing in apprenticeships and work placements to bring young people into the business, we understand, is crucial in developing our future business and developing our industry. Alloy Fabweld really enjoyed showcasing our career opportunities to the next generation of engineers. Sparking and discovering the next generation of talent is important in the evolution of our business and the industry as a whole. Who could be an important part of our qualified teams, bringing the designs to life and making what builds our current and future 'Built Environment'. 20+ students studying engineering, welding to fabrication from the Colchester Institute, visited our extensive group facilities showcasing - AFW works, sheet metal, assembly, Head Office, Drawing Office, Flexi Group production facilities, Rebel Strength factory, Rebel Strength gym, our Gosfield UK’s first off-grid carbon-neutral manufacturing facilities, Hunwick Engineering and an interactive Q&A with Bill Williams, Group CEO to ask their burning career questions. Alloy Fabweld understands that in our own industry alone, skilled engineers, welders, and fabricators are an essential part of the creation of construction and architectural projects. These skilled roles span many industries such as construction, the automotive industry, the aviation industry, the marine industry, the gas and oil industry, and many more. The students enjoyed speaking with our teams and getting hands-on with our latest technology, and machinery. They gained a greater understanding of the processes within the different businesses. The feedback was that this offered them a real-life understanding of working in the manufacturing industry and paved their next steps for their important steps into a manufacturing careers. Without these skilled people, many essential everyday life things that we all rely upon could not exist - buildings, staircases, lifts, trains, cars, kitchen appliances, vehicles - to space travel. 70% of all manufactured products across the globe are created by these skilled trades. With 2023 looking really busy for our businesses, it is important we help younger talented sparks join our businesses and grow their experience and skills with us as we expand even more. • Regenerating | Revolutionising | Battersea Power Station

For this eagerly anticipated project, we combined our expertise to create a unique façade, trapezoidal roof design, water ripple canopy, feature staircase, and more. Quoted as ‘visionary and ambitious’ this is one of the largest redevelopment projects ever seen in London. The Alloy Fabweld team shares something rather special and unique that has ‘welded’ together beautifully for Battersea, as part of the impressive £9bn redevelopment delivery. Combining our specialist design, engineering, manufacturing, and efficient project management skills, while working with esteemed designers on the design, creation, and installation. Our team developed the textured effect and unique 'water ripple' effect canopy design, façade, feature staircase, and much more for Sir Robert McAlpine on this significant project. For the Battersea project, many unique elements came together for the overall design working with expert designers including Lord Norman Foster's design of the unusual yet distinctive trapezoidal roof light. Foster's architects conceived a uniquely curved Gaudi style façade which was intricately considered at every angle and elevation with the design combining unique geometry, and meticulous layouts around the feature glass panels in Prospect Park. Antoni Gaudí I Corvet is best known for being at the forefront of Catalan Modernism architectural style in the 19th and 20th centuries. Our combined expertise demonstrates how safety does not have to be boring, the design and creation considered all features including a glass lift, smoke shaft, and vent feature that needed to complement and contrast with the overall focal features. Since 2012, the Grade II Listed Power station, over six acres has been undergoing painstaking restorations to maintain this world-renowned landmark. The Battersea Power station has seen a major eight-year redevelopment for the area, which includes a new high street known as The Electric Boulevard and a residential and shopping area of Prospect Park. Electric Boulevard offers a new pedestrianised high street, between Gehry Partners’ Prospect Place and Foster + Partners’ Battersea Roof Gardens to the riverside neighbourhood’s Zone 1 London Underground Station. Electric Boulevard was beautifully conceived and designed as part of the overall redevelopment by designers Adamson's LDA, putting this new and emerging business area in Wandsworth which provides high-quality office space in Battersea on the map. The vast 42-acre (over 8 million sq ft) former industrial brownfield site now further contains a community of homes, shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, offices, and 19 acres of public space. The £9bn redevelopment project is the focus of a vibrant, mixed-use development, a new neighborhood, and a business quarter for London, serviced by a Zone 1 extension to the London Underground Northern Line and the restoration of the Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station. The Mayor of London said: “This redevelopment of a 20th Century London landmark has already helped to deliver new investment, vital transport links, and jobs for local people. Battersea Power Station will now breathe new life into this part of London – attracting more investment and boosting our economy as we build a better London for everyone.” The Electric Boulevard will serve as the main gateway to the entire Battersea development area by connecting it with the Northern Line Extension station.

  • Wild About Paradise Wildlife Park Conservation

This week we share the amazing work and impact that we were privileged to support and learn more about at the Paradise Wildlife Park annual Charity Ball, helping to raise over £10,000. Since its inception in 2006, the Paradise Wildlife Park foundation has helped many wildlife conservation projects, globally and for local conservation organisations, protecting vulnerable animals and habitats around the world. The Zoological Society of Hertfordshire (ZSH) is their registered charity with their passionate and knowledgeable team of staff and volunteers who care for endangered species in their care and raise funds to support wildlife conservation projects, both in the UK and around the globe. The projects can range from indigenous British species, such as hedgehogs and water voles to red pandas and tigers. They have supported anti-poaching in Tanzania, Wildlife Vets, conserving rainforest and wildlife habitats, Uganda Wildlife Conservation caring for many sick and injured animals in Africa, and many more. Their key focus and mission is for the conservation of many species, in their natural habitat, which helps to protect many threatened and endangered species. If you visit, you will see these being extremely well cared for, at the Paradise Wildlife Park, in Broxbourne, along with their sister charity, the Big Cat Sanctuary, based in Headcorn, Kent. All profits from the ZSH Conservation Cabin go to support many great causes, their regular special fundraising events help raise funds, and attendees get to experience first-hand the conservation within their UK parks. We joined them to celebrate with other businesses attending their annual ball for the Year of the Tiger, whilst raising funds for Wildlife & Conservation. Past ZSH events have included their Big Cat Nights, Pamper Evenings & Native Species Weekends. Please do check their events pages for details of upcoming fundraisers, which we'd highly recommend anyone interested to go along to. There are many ways to support them which can be found here - https://www.pwpark.com/zoological-society-hertfordshire/ They are hard-working and humble about the donations that they receive, and without this, they could not continue their amazing work to support these fantastic and important conservation causes.
